PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium for detecting and identifying a Providencia bacterium in a short time by a simple operation, and to provide a method for detecting the bacterium. SOLUTION: The selective medium for detecting the Providencia bacterium contains (a) nutrient required for growing the Providencia bacterium, (b) a material for inhibiting the growth of a Gram positive bacterium, (c) saccharides and/or alcohols not decomposed by the Providencia bacterium, and (d) a coloring matter having the color changed by pH. The method for detecting the Providencia bacterium comprises coating a specimen on the selective medium for detecting the Providencia bacterium, culturing the resultant bacterium for 4-80 hr, and judging the presence or absence of the Providencia bacterium in the specimen by the color of an appeared colony.
