Saturated hydrocarbons are oxidized in a fuel cell having a fuel electrode with a metallic platinum catalyst and an electrolyte of dilute sulphuric acid at a concentration of up to 1À5 mol/litre. A metal hydrogen sulphate is preferably added to the electrolyte in 1-3 mol/litre and the fuel electrode is made by leaching aluminium from a mixture of powdered gold 50-60% and powdered aluminium 50-40%. |
