PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preceding vehicle detection device capable of detecting a preceding vehicle with high accuracy. SOLUTION: When performing horizontal scanning, a vertical scanning position is set to a position having largest reflection intensity when performing vertical scanning, to perform the horizontal scanning. When performing the vertical scanning, a horizontal scanning position is set to a position having largest reflection intensity when performing the horizontal scanning, to perform the vertical scanning. Thereby, because a scanning center position of laser light is automatically changed to the forward position having the largest reflection intensity, a reflector of the preceding vehicle can be kept to capture by the laser light even when one's own vehicle performs pitching or the like.
