PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve exhaust emission by compensating fuel shortage due to adhesion generated during suspension of air fuel ratio feed back control after return from fuel cut and quickly returning condition of the inside of catalyst into an appropriate emission control window. SOLUTION: Quantity of injected fuel is increased by adhesion correction quantity after fuel cut during a period between return from fuel cut and start of air fuel ratio feed back control. If it is determined that actual air fuel ratio gets in a roughly rich condition based on output of a front air fuel ratio sensor or it is determined that a condition of the catalyst gets in a roughly rich condition based on output from a rear air fuel ratio sensor, fuel adhesion correction is completed. Consequently, adhesion fuel lost due to fuel cut is compensated and the inside of the catalyst under excess oxygen condition can be quickly returned into the appropriate emission control window, air fuel ratio is quickly normalized and purification rate of the catalyst can be quickly improved.
