PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method and a device for an internal combustion engine 1, capable of further quickly transferring to homogeneous operation from stratified operation of the gasoline direct injection type internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This operation method of the internal combustion engine 1 for an automobile having an exhaust gas recirculating passage 5 switched between different operation modes of the internal combustion engine 1, permits switching between the different operation modes, when a deviation from a desired value or a value depending on the desired value of the sum of a residual gas rate of an internal part and an external part, falls within an area imparted in advance. The operation device 15 of the internal combustion engine 1 has a permission unit 25 for permitting the switching between the different operation modes, when the deviation from the desired value or the value depending on the desired value of the sum of the residual gas rate of the internal part and the external part, falls within the area imparted in advance.
