摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve timing control device for an internal combustion engine, capable of being recovered from the failure in operation in an early period even when the failure in operation is generated in a lock mechanism. SOLUTION: This device comprises a valve timing variable mechanism for changing a relative rotating phase of a cam shaft to a target phase on the basis of pressures of a spark advance-side pressure chamber and a spark-lag side pressure chamber, and a lock mechanism for locking the relative rotating phase to the specific lock phase through the mechanical engagement. The lock state by the lock mechanism is released by the pressure of each pressure chamber. When the lock state of the lock mechanism is detected during the operation for changing the relative rotating phase by the valve timing variable mechanism, the pressure in each pressure chamber is temporarily changed to reduce the torque to change the relative rotating phase to the target phase (time t1-t2), and then is gradually recovered to an original state (time t2-t4).
