PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transfer device and a centering method for the transfer device with which a centering work can automatically be performed with good precision for a short period of time. SOLUTION: This transfer device is provided with a clamper 1 having fingers 10 openably/closably holding a work W, a shifting means 2 for shifting the clamper 1 in a prescribed direction, and an automatically centering mechanism 3. The automatically centering mechanism 3 is provided with an opening degree detecting means 11 for detecting the opening degree of the fingers 10 when the fingers 10 are closing-driven and abutted on a punch MO as the centering objective, and a control means for setting a position where the clamper 1 is to be disposed on the basis of the detected result with the opening degree detecting means 11 and controlling the shifting means 2 according to this result. The position where the detected result with the opening degree detecting means 11 becomes the minimum by driving the shifting means 2 is set as the position where the clamper 1 is to be disposed.
