PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an electrophoretic display element wherein a liquid crystal can be adopted as a dispersion medium and which has high contrast and is bright. SOLUTION: An electrophoretic display element 1 formed by assembling a plurality of display cells in each of which a dispersion medium 4 and a powdered body 5 are encapsulated is characterized in that light can be converged in the cell without utilizing the refractive index of the dispersion medium by providing a micro lens generating a focal point in the vicinity of the center of the display cell and in the vicinity of a lower side substrate 3 when parallel light is made incident from the normal direction on the display cell on an upper side substrate 2 of each display cell.
