PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stem for an optical semiconductor laser element that is not required to be hermetically sealed up and high in reliability, which is simple in structure and mounted with the laser element keeping it high in heat dissipation. SOLUTION: The stem 1 is composed of an eyelet 10 serving as a base, a protective unit 14 provided upright at the peripheral edge of the eyelet 10, and a heat dissipating unit 12 which is arranged upright on the eyelet 10 inside the protective unit 14 and provided with a side where the optical semiconductor laser element is mounted.
