PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure an efficient processing capacity by carrying a photograph film in correspondence with the switching operation of an imaging means to a carrying passage inserted with the photograph film thereby shortening the waiting time up to start of reading. SOLUTION: The image reader comprising a carrying means provided, in the main scanning direction, with a plurality of carrying passages for carrying a photograph film along the subscanning direction, an imaging means provided with a plurality of light receiving elements arranged in the main scanning direction in order to pick up an image carried on the photograph film which is carried by the carrying means, and a means for switching the position of the imaging means among a plurality of carrying passages is further provided with a control means performing drive control of the carrying means such that the photograph film is carried toward an image readable position corresponding to the switching operation of the switching means, thus realizing an image reader capable of more efficient imaging.
