A computer system (80) comprising a personal computer assembly (motherboard) (62), memory (86) for storing data, means for detecting loss of applied power (70), and means responsive to the detecting means for inhibiting data transfers by the processor (88) of the personal computer and the memory (86). In accordance with the invention, memory (86) comprises non-volatile memory and the inhibiting means applies a signal to the memory (86) to inhibit data transfer operations of the memory (86). The means for detecting loss of applied power (70) detects loss at a power mains connection (100) of a power supply (102) for supplying operating power to the personal computer assembly (62).
