PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To create an effective segment image, and to improve OCR recognition precision by easily and accurately specifying a region that a user wishes to select from a displayed image. SOLUTION: A method for designating a character string to be recognized comprises a designating means for designating characters one by one from a character string to be read by an OCR in image information displayed on a screen by a digital image storage having an image display means; and a character string designating apparatus that has a counting means for counting the designated times for passing image data at a designated periphery and designated count information to the character segmentation designating means.
