PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the trouble due to the collapse of a movable lens group by gravity without using an energizing member, such as a backlash elimination spring. SOLUTION: The camera is provided with: a photographing optical system including the movable lens movable in the optical axis direction; a lens driving device for driving the movable lens; a sensing meter for sensing the inclination of the optical axis of the photographing optical system relative to horizontality; and a controller which controls the lens driving device in response to a lens driving command and, besides the above control, controls the lens driving device in order to offset the moving component of the movable lens by the gravity on the basis of the sensing result of the sensing meter. For example, the controller computes the quantity of lens movement for offsetting the moving component of the movable lens by gravity according to the angle of inclination sensed by the sensing meter and controls the lens driving device on the basis of the quantity of lens movement.
