PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out a speed changing operation to the speed stage intended by a driver with a few number of operations in an automatic transmission having an automatic speed changing mode and a manual speed changing mode, when the switching operation from the automatic speed changing mode to the manual speed changing mode has been carried out. SOLUTION: When the driver has carried out the down-shift speed changing operation in the direction of by operating a manual speed changing switch in the state that a shift lever is located in the position of the automatic speed changing mode, a manual speed changing and controlling apparatus of the automatic transmission carries out the speed changing operation according to a speed changing pattern, in which a minimum speed changing ratio having the value larger than the minimum speed changing ratio in the speed changing pattern (expected speed changing pattern) usually referred in the automatic speed changing mode is used, in other words, according to the speed changing pattern (a second speed changing pattern) for allowing only the speed changing operation at a stage lower than an ordinary speed changing pattern.
