PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a caustic reduction accelerator for etching polyester fibers, which accelerates the dissolution of an objective portion printed with a caustic reduction accelerator to give a fiber structure in which a sharp watermark is formed, and to provide a method for etching the polyester fibers. SOLUTION: This caustic reduction accelerator for etching the polyester fibers comprises a quaternary ammonium salt and a polyhydric alcohol/ethylene oxide adduct prepared by adding two or more moles of ethylene oxide to a polyhydric alcohol. The method for etching the polyester fibers comprises adhering the caustic reduction accelerator to the polyester fibers, heating the treated polyester fibers at a temperature of 100 to 200°C, and then treating the polyester fibers with an alkali aqueous solution.
