PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an epoxy resin polymer and a material for an orienting film for liquid crystal display containing the same. SOLUTION: The polymer has a structure expressed by formula (I). In formula (1) (n) is an integer of >1, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently H, a halogen atom, nitro group, a 1-16C alkyl or 1-16C alkoxy group and independently locate each on the o-, m- or p- position of a benzene ring, R<SP>5</SP>is H, a 1-10C alkyl group or a 1-10C alkoxy group and independently locates on the o-, m- or p- position of a benzene ring, G is selected from the group consisting of (1) glycidyl ethers, (2) glycidyl amines, (3) glycidyl esters, (4) glycerol, (5) ethylene glycol, (6) organic silicone compounds, (7) alicyclic compounds and (8) imide epoxy resins.
