<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spatial optical modulator capable of efficiently using incident light, and a projector with which a bright projected image can be obtained. <P>SOLUTION: The optical modulator has an aperture part 203b and a liquid crystal layer 205 or the like being a modulation part for modulating the incident light in accordance with an image signal, and a prism element 211 provided in the vicinity of the aperture part 203b and being an optical path deflecting part for reflecting the incident light toward the aperture part 203b.
