PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To meet the demand for a liquid crystal display in which influence of shadow of rubbing of an alignment layer generated by a columnar spacer is eliminated and the remainder of display unevenness (a black mist) generated at black display is also eliminated. SOLUTION: The columnar spacer 254 is provided on the upper side of a black matrix 251 of a counter substrate 200 disposed opposite to a TFT substrate 100 and the position of the top part of the columnar spacer 254 coming in contact with the TFT substrate 100 is shifted from the center of a gate wiring 102 of the TFT substrate 100 to the side of a common wiring 103 parallel to the gate wiring 102. Such a structure is adopted that all the top part of the columnar spacer 254 coming in contact with the TFT substrate 100 is not brought into contact with the TFT substrate 100 but a part of the top part has a gap between the top part and the TFT substrate 100.
