METHOD FOR ADAPTIVELY UPDATING BACKGROUND IMAGE EXPRESSING BACKGROUND OF SCENE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve three major problems generally present in background image update of a conventional technique as follows: (1) background update is caused by all input images (time is wasted); (2) all pixels in each image are considered during update (time is further wasted); and (3) a manner for updating the background image is fixed (it is not optimum). SOLUTION: This method compares a background image to input images to determine a similarity scoreλfor each input image. Then, the background image is updated only if the similarity score for a particular image is less than a predetermined threshold. Presumably, any pixel whose color does not change is a part of a static background, and any pixel that does change is part of a moving object.
