PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of precisely retrieving an original electronic document without increasing the memory capacity needed for processing even when printed matter from which the original document is retrieved is printed matter consisting of a plurality of pages. SOLUTION: The printed matter consisting of the plurality of pages is electronically read, page by page, and image data corresponding to the electronic data of the printed matter are retrieved from a plurality of pieces of image data stored in a storage medium. According to the retrieval result, printed matter of the next page of the printed matter is read and image data corresponding to the electronic data of the next page on the printed matter are retrieved from the retrieval result.
