PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin filmed organic electroluminescent element having high storage durability and an excellent light emitting property. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element comprises a pair of electrode base plates having electrodes, and an organic layer having at least a light emitting layer between the electrodes. The organic electroluminescent element further comprises a sealing layer for bonding the pair of electrodes so that the pair of electrodes and a light emitting body having the organic layer are sealed. At least one electrode base plate comprises a plurality of electrodes arranged every predetermined pattern area, and a water absorbing layer formed on one part or the entire part of the gap between the electrodes.
