PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video contents reproducing method and device capable of automatically searching a scene that suits user's preference in a short period of time in the entire area of the video contents. SOLUTION: When the user requests automatic search, scenes to be reproduced are selected on the basis of the current position C and scene index information that is generated from the video contents and stored in advance. When a search request is in a forward direction, scenes Sj, Sk, Sk + 1 and Si which are not lower than a fixed critical value are extracted among scenes in a forward direction with the current position as reference, and the scene Sj located the closest to the current position is selected as a reproduction scene. In the case of backward reproduction, the closest scene ahead of the current position is selected. When the reproduction scene Sj is selected, a reproduction section is determined from the first half part of the reproduction scene Sj.
