PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having high recording density and satisfactory running properties, durability and electromagnetic transducing characteristics, and suitable for recording and reproduction of a linear system. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium 1, a magnetic layer 3 is deposited on a long size non-magnetic substrate 2 by vacuum thin film deposition technology, recording and reproduction of signals are performed by the linear system, the ratio E<SB>MD</SB>/E<SB>TD</SB>of the Young's modulus E<SB>MD</SB>in the longitudinal direction of the non-magnetic substrate to the Young's modulus E<SB>TD</SB>in the width direction is 0.8 or more, the Young's modulus E<SB>MD</SB>in the longitudinal direction and the Young's modulus E<SB>TD</SB>in the width direction are preferably≥3,000 MPa and≤10,000 MPa, and the magnetic layer consists of a laminated film of ferromagnetic metal thin films 3a and 3b of two layers having growth directions of oblique columnar structures different from each other.
