PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an infrared image recognition apparatus capable of distinguishing another vehicle from a pedestrian with high accuracy, irrespective of how an object is viewed on an infrared image, and alarm equipment using the infrared image recognition apparatus. SOLUTION: An binarized object determined as the head of a pedestrian is made to be a specific object, and in the upper portion of the head, an area MASK1 having the same distance as the distance to the specific object is searched (S41). Next, a horizontal edge detection area MASK2 including a location of the last MASK1 at which the distance to a distance to the specific object, and the distance to the MASK1 are equal, and the position of the MASK1 at which the above distances became unequal, is set (S42). A horizontal edge is detected in the horizontal edge detection area MASK2 (S43). Further, the MASK2 is divided into right and left horizontal edge detection areas (S44), and in each area, a proportion of the horizontal edge existence is calculated against a width in the horizontal direction. If a horizontal edge which satisfies a predetermined condition is existent in either one of the right and left horizontal edge detection areas (YES in S46, or YES in S47), the captured binarized object is determined as a vehicle.
