PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for refining carbon nanotubes which selectively removes only carbon impurities from aggregate comprising carbon nanotubes and carbon impurities. SOLUTION: The carbon impurities are oxidatively removed from the aggregate by utilizing the effects of forming excited oxygen atoms from oxygen molecules and of cleaving C-C bonds of the carbon impurities. These effects can be realized by irradiation with ultraviolet rays in an oxygen-containing atmosphere. The carbon impurities are selectively and oxidatively removed by selective irradiation with ultraviolet rays at a wavelength having an energy necessary to oxidatively remove carbon impurities.
