<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting a red-eye area in a digital image which automatically detect the red-eye area in a photo image. <P>SOLUTION: According to the method, the red-eye area to be a candidate in the photo image is detected in such a way that the digital image data of a color photo image are accessed, characteristic values at several positions of the photo image are calculated, and the red-eye area to be the candidate is specified on the calculated characteristic values.
