A cross-magnetic recording plate (300) comprises a substrate, a magnetic recording layer, and a soft magnetic coating (331) arranged between the substrate (310) and the magnetic recording layer (350). The soft magnetic coating is an anti-ferromagnetic layer. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) the production of a cross-magnetic recording plate; and (2) a disk drive comprising a head with a magneto-resistive reading element and the above magnetic recording plate.
