<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a three-plate type liquid crystal projector at a low cost by reducing the number of components. <P>SOLUTION: White light converted into S polarized light is color separated into beams of light of three colors. The respective beams are made to irradiate each of reflection type light valves 13R, 13G, 13B. The reflection type light valve 13G modulates the S polarized light to P polarized light and emits it in the case of a white display pixel, and in the case of a black display pixel the S polarized light is emitted without modulation and a polarizing plate 14G which is an analyzer cuts off the S polarized light, being the black display, and only the P polarized light is made incident on a crossed dichroic prism. In the case of the white display pixel, the reflection type light valves 13R, 13B emits the S polarized light without modulation and in the case of the black display pixel the S polarized light is modulated to the P polarized light and emitted and polarizing plates 14R, 14B which are analyzers cut off the P polarized light, being the black display, and only the S polarized light is made incident on the crossed dichroic prism. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
