PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital camera and a control method therefor for comparatively accurately detecting an image of a face. SOLUTION: It is confirmed whether or not a portrait imaging mode is set (step 45). A first threshold value Th1 is set (step 46) when the portrait imaging mode is set (YES in step 45), a second threshold value Th2 smaller than the first threshold value Th1 is set (step 47) when no portrait imaging mode is set (NO in step 45). A cross correlation coefficient between an object image and a template image of a face is calculated. The calculated coefficient is compared with the set threshold value and the position of the face image is detected from the object image. When the portrait imaging mode is set, since it is considered that a person exists in the object, the position of the face image can comparatively accurately be detected by increasing the threshold value.
