PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new agent for separating an optical isomer, having high resolution ability. SOLUTION: The optically active polymaleimide derivative represented by general formula (3) [wherein, for example, R<SB>3</SB>-X<SB>3</SB>, R<SB>4</SB>-X<SB>4</SB>, R<SB>5</SB>-X<SB>5</SB>and R<SB>6</SB>-X<SB>6</SB>are each a hydrogen atom, and R<SB>1</SB>-X<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>-X<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>7</SB>-X<SB>7</SB>and R<SB>8</SB>-X<SB>8</SB>are each independently a hydrogen atom or a benzyl group (with the proviso that all of R<SB>1</SB>-X<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>-X<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>7</SB>-X<SB>7</SB>and R<SB>8</SB>-X<SB>8</SB>are not the same substituent)] is used as the agent for separating the optically active compound.
