PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for performing zero calibration and sensitivity calibration a gas detector. SOLUTION: The apparatus (10) and the method for measuring combustible gases, through the use of a catalyst sensor (12) includes housing of the catalyst sensor in a circulation chamber (16) isolated from a volume (30) of ambient gases; periodic drawing (60) of an ambient gas sample into the circulation chamber; combusting of the combustible gases in the ambient gas sample at the catalyst sensor and the circulation chamber, for example, until complete combustion is substantially completed; and the measurement (62) of a plurality of output signals of the catalyst sensor, simultaneously with the interruption of the extraction of the ambient gas sample, while the sample is made to burn in the catalyst chamber.
