An imaging device for picking up an object, comprising a solid state imaging element (1) for conducting photoelectric conversion according to a received image light, a switching unit (10) for switching between a first mode as an imaging mode that reads charges accumulated in the solid state imaging element (1) on an n-frame basis (n: natural number) and a second mode as an imaging mode that reads charges accumulated in the solid state imaging element (1) on an m-field basis (m: natural number) and adds an odd-number charge and an even-number charge that are adjacent in the vertical direction of read charges while using different combinations for respective m fields to output the added results, and a control unit (9) for controlling the switching unit (10) to let it switch an imaging mode to the first mode in compliance with a low-output-sensitivity imaging request and to the second mode in compliance with a high-output-sensitivity imaging request.
