Production of steel strips comprises coiling a coil from a steel strip having a carbon starting content (% CA) in such a way that its layers are arranged at a distance from each other, annealing at a reaction temperature lying above the Ac3, and feeding a carburized gas (Rgas) through the space present between the individual layers of the coil until a carbon content (% CR) is increased by at least 0.1 weight % in the edge layer of the steel strip.
