A gas generator, comprising at least one adsorber (3A, 3B) containing an adsorbent, typically a zeolite, to produce a separated gas such as oxygen from an input gas mixture, has a buffer chamber (4) for the separated gas, part of which is shaped to form an interior space containing at least part of an adsorber. The shaped part of the buffer chamber is tubular and U-shaped when projected in at least one plane; it can be generally annular in shape or be in the form of a quadruple U, forming a structure on which at least part of the assembly is mounted and enabling its overall weight to be under 50 kg. The residual gas, poor in oxygen, is discharged through a silencer (6).
