PURPOSE: A plasma display apparatus and a method for driving a plasma display panel are provided to increase the contrast ratio by generating the priming discharge and the priming erase discharge at the display gap in the frequency of a sub-field in a field. CONSTITUTION: A plasma display apparatus includes a plasma display panel and a driving control unit. The plasma display panel is provided with a front panel(1), a rear panel(2) and a plurality of discharge spaces(9) formed between the front panel and the rear panel(2). The front panel includes a plurality of front electrode sets, each provided with a scan electrode(3), a sustain electrode and a priming discharge electrode(19). One of gaps between the scan electrode and the priming discharge electrode and between the sustain electrode and the priming discharge electrode forms the priming discharge gap for generating the discharge and the gap between the scan electrode and the sustain electrode forms the display gap. The rear panel includes a plurality of data electrodes extending along a second direction. And, the plasma display panel is driven based on the first driving control signal generated from the driving control unit.
