<p>The operating method has the injected fuel quantity supplied during each engine operating cycle as a number of individual fuel injections, with adjustment of the injected fuel quantity, up to a given minimum fuel quantity, by suppression of one or more individual fuel injections. The quantity of fuel injected during each individual fuel injection is reduced to a minimum value, according to a defined characteristic, before suppression of individual fuel injections.
