Menu display on a handheld device

A hand held device for displaying information comprises an information store storing information in a hierarchical organisation, a display, a user input device, and a display controller. The display displays information retrieved from the information store and displays user selectable menu items corresponding to information available from the information store. The user input device receives user selections of displayed menu items. The display controller controls the display to display a currently selected menu item in a first area and information corresponding to the currently selected menu item in a second area, and further menu items corresponding to a level in the hierarchy in the second area when a user selection is received.
