PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent chemical deterioration of the surface of a photoreceptor caused by proximity electric discharge by forming a protective layer on the surface of an image carrying body in an image forming apparatus which uses an electrification system by proximity electric discharge. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with a protecting agent applying means 30 as a protective agent supply means to supply a protecting agent 32 to the surface of a photoreceptor 1 so as to form a protective layer as a means to prevent deterioration by electric discharge . The protecting agent applying apparatus includes a fur brush 31 as a coating member, the protecting agent, and a pressurizing spring 33 to press the protecting agent in the direction to the fur brush. A protective layer comprising zinc stearate is formed on the surface of the photoreceptor by the protecting agent applying apparatus, and this protective layer prevents chemical deterioration of the photoreceptor surface due to proximity electric discharge.
