PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a versatile adapter not requiring work for changing a workpiece to solve the problem that a many time and labor is required to align the axis of the workpiece (centering) every time when the workpiece is changed. SOLUTION: The adapter 3 has a cylindrical shape and has a first step portion 34 and a second step portion 35 at positioning portions in the axial direction. In addition, the adapter 3 is configured so that the adapter 3 can receive the collet 2 therein, and the slit portions of the adapter 3 are in alignment with the slit portions of the collet 2 in the radial direction. Further, when soft jaws 13 move in the radial direction, the adapter 3 and the collet 2 elastically deform, and the soft jaws 13 can grip the workpiece W1 via the adapter 3 and the collet 2.
