PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of performing a user personal authentication even if the image reading apparatus is solely used, and protecting read image data from unauthorized use such as alteration and impersonation. SOLUTION: As shown in the figure, an attachable/detachable memory device 2 storing authentication information for performing personal authentication of a user using the image reading apparatus is provided. The image reading apparatus 1 is constituted so as to be provided with a means for performing identification to confirm whether or not the user is the party himself/herself by collating the authentication information stored in the device 2 with the authentication information previously registered in the image reading apparatus. The apparatus is constituted so that an original document 3 can be read by using the image reading apparatus only when verification is performed by the means of performing personal authentication, thereby enabling providing an electronic signature or approved information to the read image data.
