Organic compounds which irreversibly adsorb to a liquid mercury electrode can be analyzed by Surface Enhanced Raman Spectrophotometry by adsorbing the analyte onto the electrode; forming a solid phase on the mercury electrode to form SERS-active structures; generating radiation and directing the radiation to be incident on the surface of the electrode so that radiation is emitted from electrically conductive particles; and detecting the emitted radiation which measures Raman scattered radiation.
