The search device has a transmitter for transmitting a radio signal which activates a transponder fitted to the object being sought. On activation, the transponder emits an electromagnetic activation signal. The portable device also has a receiver which receives this electromagnetic signal. It further includes an information device (1) for providing information relating to the sought object. The receiver provides a field strength value and/or a field orientation parameter of the electromagnetic identification signal of the sought transponder at the location of the receiver and represents this via the information device.
