PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine a crank angle and a group of cylinders at an early stage while attaining downsizing of the device by increasing the variety of information with less number of signals without using much amount of time-series data. SOLUTION: A ratio between the preceding edge-space and the succeeding edge-space is taken as an expansion ratio. An edge having an expansion ratio higher than a determination value (e.g. 1.5) is only the edge of BTDC65°in each of cylinders. Thus, determination of an crank angle is made by checking the expansion ratio. In edges determined as BTDC65°, trailing edges occur in the 1st and the 4th cylinders, and leading edges occur in the 2nd and the 3rd cylinders. Thus, a group of cylinders is determined according to the direction of the edge. As for the number of edges to be input in the range of BTDC65°- BTDC65°, two patterns of 3 and 5 for every cylinder group are prepared, so determination of a cylinder is made on the basis of the result of determination of the number of edges and the group of cylinders.
