PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus in which any scratch is prevented from being conspicuous and photograph processing efficiency is not to be deteriorated as much as possible, for acquiring picture data of a frame picture in a photographic film. SOLUTION: The reader is provided with a halogen lamp 2 irradiating the film for reading transparent picture data of the frame picture formed in the photographic film, a first CCD 9 reading transparent picture data by visible light in the respective frame pictures formed in the film, a second CCD 10 reading transparent picture data by infrared light in the respective frame pictures, a film defect detection part 20 detecting a degree of the scratch in the film from picture data acquired by the second CCD 10, and a diffusion plate control part 21 inserting a movable diffusion board 5 into an optical path between the halogen lamp 2 and the photographic film when the degree of the scratch is not less than a prescribed level. In the frame picture whose degree of the scratch is not less than the prescribed level, the first CCD 9 can acquire picture data in a state where the movable diffusion board 5 is inserted.
