PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a testing method and a testing device of a metal belt for a metal belt continuously variable transmission in which characteristics such as friction, abrasion, etc. between an element and a ring can be evaluated independently of characteristics between a pulley and the element, and in an almost similar state as actual equipment. SOLUTION: The testing method of the metal belt for the metal belt continuously variable transmission is provided with a plurality of elements 2 and the endless belt ring 3. At least one element 2 is arranged in the same way as the motion state, held not to substantially move. Tension is applied between the held element 2 and the ring 3 brought in contact with the element 2 in the same way as in motion, and the ring 3 is made to move back and forth in the moving direction of the belt with respect of the element 2.
