PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylinder operation control device of an internal combustion engine capable of maximizing the effect of an improvement in fuel consumption due to the halt of cylinders and causing no trouble in traveling even in the occurrence of abnormality of a lift operation means. SOLUTION: This control device comprises an engine valve operation halt switching means VTS1 controlling a hydraulic pressure circuit VT for switching between the operation and the halt of engine valves IV and EV and the hydraulic pressure of the hydraulic pressure circuit, an engine valve operating means VTS2 operating the engine valves IV and EV separately from the engine valve operation halt switching means VTS1, and a hydraulic pressure detection means S1 detecting the hydraulic pressure of the hydraulic pressure circuit VT. Based on the hydraulic pressure detected by the detection means S1 and the controlled states of the engine valve operation halt switching means VTS1 and the engine valve operation means VTS2, the presence or absence of a failure in the engine valve operation rest switching means VTS1 and the engine valve operation means VTS2 are determined for the presence or absence of a trouble.
