<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control technology suitable to an image forming apparatus that obtains image density by detecting a plurality of components of light emitted from a toner image. <P>SOLUTION: P-polarized light is emitted toward an intermediate transfer belt 71 from a light emitting element 601. An output voltage Vp from a light-receiving unit 670p corresponding to the component of the polarization is detected. A light quantity control signal S1c is controlled so that the detection value is a predetermined reference value. With the thus adjusted quantity of emitted light, an output voltage Vs from the light receiving unit 670s corresponding to the component of s-polarization is detected.
