<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the precision of detecting the brake lamp of a preceding vehicle. <P>SOLUTION: This system comprises a vehicle finding-out part 4 for cutting a reference template from an input image taken by a camera 2 mounted on a vehicle; a reference template storage memory 14; a vehicle reference template formation part 4 for extracting the area of the vehicle from the reference template as a vehicle reference template; and a brake lamp position definition part 6 for detecting the brake lamp 28 of the chased vehicle from the vehicle reference template. The vehicle reference template formation part 5 has a vehicle reference template storage memory 51, a vehicle chasing processing part 52, a chasing reliability determination part 53, a vehicle image storage memory 54 for template update calculation, and a vehicle reference template decision part 61.
