PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make color slippage and tint not to be generated in a color image which is formed by processing a joint of a scale which is formed on an intermediate transfer belt effectively. SOLUTION: A ribbon-shaped scale 5 on which many slits 8 are continuously provided at equal intervals over the whole periphery of the intermediate transfer belt. Although a joint 11 is made between the tip and the rear edge of the scale 5, a period T' becoming the spacing between slits 8', 8' straddling over the joint 11 is made identical to a period T becoming the spacing between slits of parts other than the joint 11. Thereby, since the period between slits can made constant over the whole periphery of the belt even when there is the joint 11, the control of the belt speed of the intermediate transfer belt, which is performed by reading the scale 5 with a sensor can be performed correctly.
