PURPOSE: A moving picture motion estimation method using an MSEA(Multilevel Successive Elimination Algorithm) is provided to enhance arithmetic efficiency for motion estimation by obtaining an optimal solution in the MSEA and eliminating unnecessary calculation. CONSTITUTION: An MSEA is performed to the first candidate block located in vertexes of a quadrangle centering around an initial SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) predicted from image data, and an elimination level is extracted(201,202). An elimination level is predicted to the second candidate block located in sides of the quadrangle using the elimination level of the first candidate block, and the MSEA is performed from the predicted elimination level to extract an elimination level(203). The MSEA is performed to the third candidate block expanded centering around the quadrangle until it is achieved to a boundary block of a search region, and an elimination level of the third candidate block is extracted(204). An elimination level is predicted to the fourth candidate block using the elimination levels of the first to third candidate blocks, and the MSEA is performed from the predicted elimination level to extract an elimination level of the fourth candidate block(205). |
